Ghost and Darkness

A small black kitten, no more than 3 months old, looked at the wood fence. After a bit of careful examination he crouched down, shifted his weight and jumped. Stretching out his body he grabbed the top and climbed over. Playing in the yard were three puppies, their dame was sleeping close by. The puppies ran to the fence and started yapping at the.
"Get out"
"This is our yard"
"Leave"
The kitten yawned.
"I'm not in your yard, I'm on the fence"
The puppies seemed a little uncertain.
"Our humans will come and then you will have to"
The kitten twitched an ear.
"Your humans?" He questioned.
The puppies looked at each other.
"Our mothers humans But we will get our own soon"
The kitten snorted a laugh.
"Good luck, I hope you get decent ones. Loyal ones.
The puppies huffed.
"Humans are loyal"
"Ya, besides what would a cat know about loyalty anyway?
The kittens tail twitched in irritation.
"Cats are just as loyal to the humans we choose as you are. We just show it differently."
When the puppies scoffed at him the kitten glared.
"Let me tell you about a cat's loyalty. About kneed."
The puppies quieted down. They liked stories.
"Kneed was just a kitten barely 8 weeks old when she met her humans. Two were large, a Male and a female, and the third was a small female. The small one squealed and swooped her up quickly. Kneed knew that the little one was perfect and started to pur her heart out. The big Male said okay and they all climbed into one of the loud machines that take them places. The trip was frightening for Kneed and she ran under the couch when the girl set her down. As soon as her heart stopped pounding in her chest she came out and apologized to her human. The small female showed her a box of litter and dishes with food and water."
One of the puppies interpreted with a question.
"How is that loyal?"
Ignoring the question the kitten continued.
"Whenever the humans left she would sit in the window and wait for them to return as she knew they would. She would rub their legs to welcome them home. She played with her human, let her dress her like a doll and sat nicely while they had tea
She would eat the dry crunchy things that they gave her for food even though she could go out and get fresh meat whenever she wanted. Why, like any good cat, she would even bring them prey when they didn't seem to be eating right"

He paused for a moment before continuing.
"This went on for several years and it seemed like her she and here humans were going to be together for ever. She even gained a fourth one who was tiny and male. The small ones grew bigger and things seemed perfect"

A puppy chimed in.
"See, humans are loyal"
The kitten shook his head.
"One day the humans brought home a lot of boxes that they started putting their things into. They were so busy and distracted that they let her out during a time when she was normally made to stay in. She met another cat while outside and spent some time with him. When she got back she noticed that the machine had something connected to it and her humans were moving some of their furniture into it. She went inside and curled up to sleep. When she woke up they were putting the put the boxes in. By then it was afternoon. She watched them load up into the machine and leave."

The kitten glanced across the yard sadly.
"Knowing that they were coming back she sat in the window and waited. She snoozed off and on staying alert for the sound of them returning. When she got thirsty she quickly got a drink, when she was hungry she ate ate the stuff they left out. She always returned to the window to wait. Eventually the water and food was gone. She went outside. The front door was just open enough for her to pull it out enough to get threw. The once short grass had grown some. She was able to find prey without leaving the yard. While that helped with her thirst it didn't take care of it. She went inside and began checking all the places the humans put water in. Only, there wasn't any water in any of them, even the thing that they relieved themselves in was empty. She stayed by the house until she got so thirsty she had to leave to find something to drink. Fortunately, there was a stream nearby and even though the water smelled slightly off and had a bad aftertaste she drank it. She was not going any further from home than she absolutely had to. She wasn't going to miss her family when they came for her as she knew they would."
"She started having bad dreams about long Sharp teeth and claws.
She would hear whispers but when she tried to find the source they would stop.
Day by day the dreams got worse and the whispers louder."
"So this continued and she knew that she was going to have kittens. She believed that her humans would be happy when they returned and saw. So she waited because she knew they would return. Her kittens grew and when the time came close she made a den out of whatever she could find.
She had four kittens, thee were all black and good sized but the fourth was much smaller and her fur was a silvery color. The hairs started out black but faded to white at the top. Kneed would have thought that the little one was going to die but she shoved her way threw her siblings and filled her tummy. A few days later they were looking at her with alert blue eyes. By the end of the week they were actively playing. The dreams were keeping Kneed awake and she could make out some of what the voices were saying. The word kill. Still Kneed waited and watched, for her humans and over her kittens. The voices became clearer saying that her humans left her and would never return.
When the voices began telling her to kill her kittens she started to get worried. She would never let anyone hurt them much less do so herself."
The kitten stared towards the distance. A very sad look entered his eyes as he continued.
"One day the voices got to be too much. She hissed at her kittens to get away and turned to attack a shadow on the wall. She would claw desperately at one spot then another hissing I wont, don't touch them. She clawed until he claws split and broke. Then till her paws bled. Then panting she began to charge as fast as she could at the doorways slamming her head into them. Over and over until she was staggering. Still she kept going. Her scared kittens watched in horror as she banged her head over and over until they heard a crunching sound and Kneed's head distorted. Kneed was still standing and she turned to face her litter. Saying just safe she collapsed. Her kittens covered her, but weren't sure what had happened or what to do."
Seeing a small silver kitten paw the air across the yard the black kitten looked down at the puppies and said.
"You see cats are loyal, to bad some humans aren't."
He jumped down from the fence and walked away as the puppies whined.
"Wait, what about the kittens?"
A little bit later the puppies realized that their food was gone.
