The small kitten paced at the corner of the wooden fence watching the area behind the fenced in yard. A few days ago they had successfully snagged a bowl full of kibble. Today's plan was a bit more complicated, harder and a lot more brazen. Today they hoped to score more than a bowl of kibble.
His smaller sister had spent the last few nights going through the house finding out where they stored the supply. She had a plan figured out so that they could get all that they had.
His job was to keep the dogs distracted while they were working, just like last time. He had already told them about Kneed and her kittens and they were quite interested. He would just continue the story for a while.
A silver kitten about half his size slipped around the corner to pause and nod slightly before disappearing behind it again.
That was his cue.
Backing up slightly he coiled, calculated and then sprang to the top of the wall.
The puppies were tumbling around their dame. Good, new just needed to get her attention and the pups would follow.
He slinked along the top of the fence boldly walking into her line of sight.
Almost immediately the dog ran to the fence and stood up on it growling.
"Get gone. Leave go get go"
The puppies ran over their barking chimed in.
"It's the one"
"He told the story."
The dame's growl got deeper.
"Keep your lies away. Get out go get."
The puppies paused before clamoring in"
"No, stay"
"What about the kittens?"
"Kneed's people came right?"
Looking down the little black male sighed sadly.
"No, her humans didn't, others did but they were the bad ones"
The adult dog growled up at him.
"Lies, lier, humans are good not bad good"
He gazed at her sadly and sighed.
"Not all of them. Like dogs, cats, even squirrels some are good, but some are bad. These humans were the worst kind but the kittens didn't know that. All of their short lives they had been told stories about how great Kneed's humans were and that they were going to come back and take all of them home. They believed that.
So when two males walked in they thought that they had to be Kneed's, or some of them.
When the males entered the house they started walking around and talking to each other.
""Ya think were gonna find anything here other then the wires an' pipes?""
""Naw, lokit this place, the fixtures and stuff are prolly trashed. Heck, that there doors been open no tellin what's been here. We best ""
Hay, take a gander at this, what ya think happened to it?""
""Dont rightly know or care.""
""Look's like it had youngins it was nursing. Think they's still livin?"""
The kitten looked directly into each set of engrossed eye and stopped one the mother dog.
"I know what you're thinking 'them humans dont sound bad' but that's the worst of it. At that point they sounded and acted just like the kittens expected. They didn't know that they should be wary and stay out of sight. Didn't know that those were not the humans they were looking for."
"The humans started talking as the kittens slowly started walking out with the silver one in the lead.
"Well, will ya looky here, ain't that somethin"
"Theys kinda tiny to be walking like that. Look like thems eyes should only be jus open."
"Aw, let's name um."
"Why?"
"Well, fer the fun of it. Don't calling colors get boring?"
"The other human shrugged. The kittens had no idea what the human was talking about and if they had they would have run. Instead they let him pick them up one by one and give them names.
"Lookit this one, like an itty bitty ghost so we call it Ghost."
He handed her to the other human and picked up the largest kitten.
"An, we cannot have the Ghost wit out the Darkness. "
"What's wit you an that movie?"
"Taint jus a movie. Them lions was real. I seen the pictures. Get ta that there Smithsonian museum I'm a gonna see um real like"
"Ya, whatever, I jus don't think two lions coulda killt all them people less they was demons or something. Then that guy couldn't a killt um like that."
"Its documented "
"Jus get them other two so's we can get um in the box and get to the real work."
Picking up the other two he named the other female shadow and the other male night. They were carried out to the humans machine and were put into a cage like box with two puppies. Then the humans went back inside.
The puppies were curled up together and looked at the kittens as they sat there in semi darkness.
It was Ghost who approached the puppies and addressed them.
"I'm Ghost and my sister Shadow and my brothers Darkness and Night" She pointed each one out as she introduced them.
"Atlest that's what the humans called us before they put us in here. What are you called?"
The two puppies shuffled about a bit before they answered.
"One"
"Two"
"We have been in here"
"A very long time."
The way they talked was a bit odd with one starting and the other finishing but wasn't hard to follow.
"Are we"
"Going home soon?"
The kittens all shrugged in unison as Ghost said
"We don't know. It could be awhile, they said they had work. Best just settle in and wait."
They all sighed and curled up around each other. No point in being chilly."
The dog grumbled
"Nothing about that would make them bad"
The kitten looked annoyed at the interruption.
"No it doesn't. It makes them seem like good humans. Like they were going to give everybody a warm, safe place to call home. Shame that things are not always as they seem.
They were all woken when the machine loudly jerked to a start and began moving.
Excitedly the puppies started trying to look out the openings to see where they were going. The kittens, however, found the noise painfully loud and the movement a touch unsettling.
It made a couple of stops as they went without the humans turning the machine off or getting out.
Those had been close together and when the machine was finally turned off and the humans got out they waited hopefully.
Instead of taking them into a house the brought a heavy dog back with them and put it into a similar box next to them.
This dog was nothing like the puppies. It had been growing and snarling the entire way too the box. It was almost completely incoherent and they were only able to understand a few words. As soon as it smelled them it got frantic trying to dig its way through the boxes to get at them snarling a bit more intelligible.
"Meat, fresh, eat it, kill, eat, kill"
The terrifying dog just kept this up as they started moving again. It was Ghost, it was always Ghost, who stood her ground. In fact she tried to talk to the beast.
What it told her was not pleasant.
According to it they were all going to be eaten and it really wanted to do the eating. This was going to happen in a place called 'the pit' and that he would be tearing up other dogs there.
Needless to say, none of them were very sure about things after this."
The puppies suddenly started to tip out questions.
"Was he really going to eat them?"
"The mean dog wouldn't eat the two puppies, right?"
"That pit thing isn't really real is it?"
"How could a dog be like that?
The kitten looked seriously at the dogs.
"I think maybe the humans make them like that sometimes. Like the thing that makes some humans bad is given to the dogs. It's contagious somehow."
The kitten got a distant look.
"I think bad is a sickness."

"The next time the machine stopped it was at an empty wooden building. The men put the puppies and kittens into a cage. There was a dog next to them and she was in bad shape. She looked at them with sad eyes when they started talking to her.
According to her she was called Bait. They would put her in the pit with the fighting dogs but didn't fight. They could tell that it had been going on for sometime because she was covered with scars. One of her back legs had been removed and a front leg turned in an odd way.
That was when Ghost decided and announced that none of them were getting hurt. She was going to figure out how to get them all out of that place.
The pit was a ring for the dogs to fight in. Just big enough for that purpose. It had walls that were too high to jump over from the base.
Ghost had the kittens take up places around the pit and told them that they had to attack the dog when it wasn't looking. If it came directly at them they should jump on its face. If it took them close enough to jump from it over the wall. Once over to go back to Bait.
The plan went well. Ghost was the last over the wall and when she returned the puppies were already free. Bait was wearing a heavy chain collar that was attached to a heavy chain. If she even stood the collar got tighter.
It took all of them, kittens and puppies to loosen it and get it off of her.
Bait had difficulty moving fast but the humans were too busy cheering on the violence in the pit so they managed to slip out.
Once outside they found themselves uncertain about where to go so they hid in the back of a thing on one of the machines. Exhaustion overtook them and they all fell into a deep sleep"
The adult dog growled
"Lier. Clearly lies. Don't come back."
The kitten shrugged.
"Ask around and not just those st the dog park. Ask the dirty dogs without collars. Talk to them."
He jumped off the wall.
A small silver kitten glowered
"What was that D?"
He looked at her
"Sorry Ghost, I had to finish the story. Dumb bitch didn't believe it.
How's Bait doing?"
Ghost looked over to a wooded area.
"She's managing. I think that we might have to take a break when we get to the park."
